About this Event

Shimshal Kutch is one of the most exciting events, when the local people, with their flocks and herds of Yaks laden with their bedding and utensils, all move to the upland grazing grounds of Shimshal Pass (Shuwerth and Shuijerav) where they make Cheese (Qurut), Butter and other live stock products.

Shimshal Pass area is one of the summer grazing pastures of Shimshal valley. It is one of the most attractive mountain valleys in Pakistan – located in the high pasturelands of the mysterious Pamirs just 4,735m above sea level and it lies on the watershed between South Asia and Central Asia. The area is unique for its beautiful landscape with striking isolated mass of reddish-brown stone rising like a watch-tower over the watershed. The snow capped and easy trekking peaks of Mingligh Sar 6,050m, Velyo Sar 6,030m, Quz Sar 5,900m, and the mesmerizing crystal clear water lakes give exceptional beauty to the area.

Shimshal Pass is the habitat of Wild fauna; Brown Bear, Ibex, Blue Sheep, Snow Leopard, Mountain Foxes, Hare, Golden Eagle, Partridge, and Snow Cock and native flora of every kind of wildflower covering the meadows in the spring and summer.

People of Shimshal, mostly women, spend 5 months with their livestock on the pastures. They are rich in culture and tradition.
